Why cycle in Girona?
Girona is not just a cycling destination — it’s a place where you can start your day in a historic city center and be on quiet roads just minutes later. Here, you get variety within a short distance: rolling hills, legendary climbs, rides along the Costa Brava coastline, and a growing gravel network that makes the area perfect for both training and adventure.
On this page, you’ll find an overview of road cycling, gravel, the best climbs, the best time to visit, and how to plan your trip — or choose from one of our Bike Camps where you can skip the planning altogether.
Girona works perfectly as a “one-base” cycling destination: you can ride in multiple directions without changing hotels, and experience great variation in terrain and scenery within just a few days. For a concrete example of the destination’s diversity, see “Girona – Europe’s Best Destination for a Cycling Holiday”
But the city itself is also part of the experience: a historic atmosphere, cozy cafés, and a strong cycling culture that makes recovery and social time a natural part of the trip. And if you stay in the heart of the old town — as we always do — everything is just a stone’s throw away.
In short, Girona is a magical medieval city that breathes cycling.

Gravel cycling in Girona
Gravel riding in Girona is something special because you can reach a vast network of dirt roads, forest trails, and beautiful “Champange gravel” roads almost directly from the city center, winding out into the Catalan countryside. This means you can head out on a true adventure ride without spending time on transport, a car, or complicated planning — you simply roll out of town and you’re underway. In recent years, the area has established itself as a European epicenter for gravel, partly through events such as The Traka, which has helped set the standard for what modern gravel can be: long, challenging routes in spectacular terrain like Les Gravares.
At the same time, many riders know that route planning for gravel in Southern Europe can be tricky — what looks like a perfect gravel road on the map can in reality turn out to be something closer to an MTB rock garden than a gravel road. If you want to avoid route stress, wrong turns, and unnecessary planning, a fully organized trip can be an ideal solution.
If you’re dreaming of a structured and well-designed gravel experience in Girona, you can read more about Gravel Camp Girona in May — a 5-day trip. Here, you’ll get a clear overview of the terrain, the routes, and the camp format, so you know exactly what to expect — both on and off the bike.
If you’d prefer a longer gravel week with more kilometers, more event atmosphere, and an experience close to the area’s major gravel events, you should check out Santa Vall + GRVL Girona. Here, gravel racing, training, community, and the unique energy that has made Girona a gravel mecca come together.

Weather in Girona – cycling all year round
Girona is a fantastic place to cycle year-round thanks to its many hours of sunshine and stable Mediterranean climate. The best periods are April–May and September–October, when the temperatures are most pleasant.
Many people choose to travel to Girona in July and August, but this is actually the most challenging period. Midday temperatures often range between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius, sometimes even higher, and Girona can feel like an oven. You can still ride, but it requires very early morning departures around 6–7 a.m. — and even at that time it can already be 25–30 degrees.
In our guide, “Best Time to Cycle in Girona,” we describe our month-by-month experiences based on living here since 2018.
Are you dreaming of a cycling camp in Girona where everything runs smoothly? Then book your trip with Bike Camp Spain, where you can relax and leave all the practical details to the two Danish guides, Fie Østerby and Bekim Christensen, who have lived and trained in Girona since 2018. We help with route planning, group dynamics, and safety, ensuring you get the best roads and the right plan for each day.
